What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It’s characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness that are more severe, frequent, or disruptive than typical behavior for a person’s age. ADHD is one of the most common mental health disorders in children, though it can persist into adulthood
Types of ADHD
ADHD is typically classified into three types, based on the dominant symptoms:
- Inattentive Type (formerly ADD) : Individuals with this type often struggle to maintain focus, follow instructions, or complete tasks. They may be easily distracted, forgetful, or have trouble organizing activities.
- Hyperactive-Impulsive Type : This type is marked by excessive activity or restlessness, difficulty staying still, and impulsive actions. People with this form of ADHD may act without thinking, interrupt others, or feel constantly “on the go.”
- Combined Type : The most common form of ADHD, where individuals display symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.
Causes of ADHD
While the exact cause of ADHD is not known, research suggests that it is a result of a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Some possible contributing factors include:
Genetics : ADHD tends to run in families, suggesting a hereditary component.
Brain structure and function : Differences in the brain’s ability to regulate neurotransmitters like dopamine may play a role.
Premature birth or low birth weight : These factors have been associated with an increased risk of ADHD.
Living with ADHD
With the right support, individuals with ADHD can thrive. Understanding one’s own strengths and challenges, creating supportive environments, and working closely with professionals can make a significant difference. Whether in school, at work, or in personal life, people with ADHD can leverage their creativity, energy, and unique perspective to succeed in various aspects of life.
Symptoms of ADHD
ADHD symptoms vary depending on the type and the individual but often include

Difficulty Paying Attention
Children with ADHD often struggle to stay focused on one task for an extended period of time. They may frequently daydream, lose track of conversations, or miss important details in schoolwork or instructions. Even in quiet settings, their mind can drift to unrelated thoughts or distractions in their surroundings. This can lead to unfinished homework, careless mistakes, and frustration for both children and parents.
Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity shows up as constant movement and an inability to stay still, even in situations that require calmness, like classrooms or study areas. Children may tap their feet, bounce in their seats, run around at inappropriate times, or seem “driven by a motor.” This high energy can disrupt school, home routines, and even playtime with friends, as it can be difficult to transition from excitement to calm focus.

Impulsiveness
Impulsiveness in ADHD is marked by acting quickly without thinking about consequences. Children might blurt out answers before a question is finished, interrupt conversations, grab things without asking, or make sudden decisions in moments of excitement. While this spontaneity can seem playful, it often causes problems in social situations and classroom settings where patience and self-control are expected.
Forgetfulness
Children with ADHD may often forget daily tasks, instructions, or where they put their belongings. They might leave homework at home, misplace books or pencils, or forget important messages to give to parents or teachers. This forgetfulness is not laziness it’s a result of challenges with attention and organization, which can make even simple routines feel overwhelming.

Difficulty Completing Tasks
Children with ADHD may eagerly start new projects, homework, or chores but quickly lose focus or interest before finishing. They might jump from one activity to another, leaving tasks half done. This pattern can cause frustration and lower confidence, as parents and teachers may see incomplete work despite the child’s effort and intelligence.
